Superior Community Preschool

What are specific benefits of a
Superior Community Preschool?

  • All children have access to quality, enhanced early learning opportunities through SCP.
  • Guaranteed instruction by a teacher holding a Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree in early childhood education.
  • Increased number of family activities and opportunities offered throughout the community because of strengthened partnerships amongst community organizations.
  • Strengthening partnerships between community organizations and parents to provide high quality, early learning experiences to ALL children in our community.
  • Increased opportunities to participate in parent education and training.
  • Expanded SCP staff education opportunities focusing on the needs of young children.
  • Integration of the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards* into the SCP program. These standards are based on current research and developmentally appropriate practices.

How does 4-year-old kindergarten
work in our community?

In the School District Of Superior, 4-year-old kindergarten is known as Superior Community Preschool (SCP).
  • Participation in SCP is voluntary for 4-year olds.
  • SCP provides an enrichment opportunity for 4-year-olds prior to Kindergarten.
  • All sites have approximately 2.5 - 3.5 hours of SCP instruction 5 days a week.
  • Superior Community Preschool is FREE at all participating sites.
  • Families may participate in “SCP only” at no charge. However, charges do apply for childcare or other extended services beyond the SCP portion of the day at participating childcare centers and Cathedral school.
  • SCP encourages partnerships between the Superior School District and existing early learning programs. SCP partners include: Cathedral School, Family Forum Head Start, New Horizons Children’s Center of Superior, Superior Children’s Center, University Children's Center, YMCA Discovery Center, and Noah’s Ark Daycare.
  • SCP is made possible through existing funding from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
